Question answered! How many activities can you have in a schedule (within in the P6 web interface)?

5,000 vs. unlimited. That is the question! There is no limit to the number of activities you can have in a project.  The web can be limited for performance reasons.  There is an admin application…Continue

I have a question about P3.  I know, what you’re thinking. Why am I still using P3?  Well believe it or not, Farley Nuclear Plant in Dothan, Alabama is still using it and I have just convinced our project controls team to utilize P6 and we are using it starting tomorrow.  However, I am confused a little.  I am a little unclear on the performance of the background of the P3 Software Sync function.  I mean when multiple users or in the file and one calculates the schedule without advising the others of his action.  If others don't refresh or run filter or update view, then we are experiencing data loss.  I am familiar with this problem, but everyone I talk to here at Farley, say that there are no data loss problems.  That seems, just untrue. and I wanted to consult my source for a better understanding.  Do you know of a problem such as this?

Trey - This was my email to my boss.

Problem : On the PA Expansion project, we are encountering problems with data being lost in Primavera, P3 after being changed individually or kicked out the temporary memory of P3 software.  This is an (VERY OLD) existing problem and normally is not much of a problem, if all persons in the project file are in the same work vicinity or work area, where they can announce to each person in the file prior to pressing the “Calculate” button.  However, this is not the case and persons in the file are spread in Three different locations.  When the “Calculate” button is pressed and is needed many times in a day, the changes are then committed to the server and is equally visible to all users.   If all persons in the file are not aware of this when the “Calculate” button is pressed and don’t have the opportunity to synchronize, then their changes are not incorporated and therefore lost and usually not noticed until someone notices a mistake and then realizes that maybe more has not been recorded at that time.

Solution :  Is to use Primavera, P6 Enterprise and get away from using Primavera, P3 It has become imperative to have better control over changes made to the PA Baseline schedule file.  P3 does not provide an adequate control mechanism to prevent lost data and effort.  Currently P3 allows a two way command, it is “READ” or “WRITE” command.  This is not adequate.  We need to control major changes to the schedule at my level and delegate specific levels of change capabilities to the chain.  These specifics can be discussed between the folks in Enterprise solutions and myself when ready, if this approved and decided that, this is the way we will control our updates.

Trey,

Hows it going?  I've been checking out your web page and it seems it does not get updated very often.  Is it still up and running?  I left you a message a while back on here and never heard back from you.  Take Care !
